What is Great Lent?
Lent is a special time of spiritual preparation for the most important feast of the Christian year — the Bright Resurrection of Christ. For forty days, the Church, together with Christ, spiritually walks a path reminding us of His forty-day fast and prayer in the desert.
Lent invites every believer to pause amidst the daily hustle, take a closer look at their life, and turn their heart again to God. It is a time of repentance, inner renewal, and strengthening of faith.
Traditionally, during this period, Catholics pay special attention to prayer, fasting, and works of mercy. Prayer helps strengthen the relationship with the Lord, fasting teaches self-control and frees the heart from all excess, and works of love remind us of Christ's call to serve our neighbors.
For those preparing to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist, Lent becomes a time of special spiritual preparation. On Easter night, they enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, sharing the joy of Christ's Resurrection with the whole community.
For every Catholic, Lent is an opportunity to start anew, be reconciled with God, experience the Sacrament of Confession more deeply, and prepare worthily for the feast of Easter.
Lent reminds us that the path to the joy of the Resurrection passes through conversion of heart, trust in God, and love of neighbor. That is why the Church annually invites us to use this grace-filled time for spiritual growth and encounter with the risen Christ.
“Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning” (Joel 2:12).
